What to Expect After Breast Reconstruction Surgery: A Survivor's Guide to Recovery
Reconstruction can feel like the light at the end of a long tunnel, but the recovery period is its own challenge. As someone who has been through it, here are the things I wish someone had told me:
Pain and tightness are normal for weeks (not days).
Drain care and output tracking can feel overwhelming at first. Keep a simple log. -
Emotional ups and downs are real; some days you love the result, others you grieve what was lost. -
Gentle movement (arm circles, shoulder rolls) helps more than you think, but only when your surgeon clears it.
Compression garments and scar massage make a big difference in the long run.
Most importantly: you're not supposed to do this alone. Having someone explain what’s normal, when to call, and how to advocate for yourself can turn fear into confidence.
