5 Questions to Ask Your Oncologist Before Starting Treatment

A cancer diagnosis is overwhelming, suddenly you're facing decisions that feel life-or-death, often with very little time to process.

As a breast cancer survivor and critical-care nurse who has walked this path myself, I know how easy it is to leave appointments feeling confused or like you missed something important.

You don't have to navigate those conversations alone. Here are 5 powerful questions I wish I had asked (and now help my clients ask) before starting treatment:

1. What are all my treatment options, and what is the goal of each one?

Understanding whether the plan is curative, control-focused, or palliative changes everything about how you weigh risks and benefits.

2. What side effects should I expect, and how will we manage them?

Ask for a realistic timeline, some side effects peak weeks later, not right away.

3. How will this treatment affect my daily life and work?

Many women are surprised by fatigue, brain fog, or mobility changes; knowing upfront helps you plan support.

4. Are there clinical trials or newer options I should consider?

Don't assume your doctor has mentioned everything; sometimes trials are available but not offered unless asked.

5. Who is my main point of contact if questions or side effects come up between visits?

Knowing who to call (and when) reduces panic and prevents small issues from becoming emergencies.

These questions aren't about doubting your doctor; they're about being an active partner in your care. Bring a notebook or have a trusted person with you to write down answers. If you're ever unsure how to phrase them or advocate for yourself, that's exactly why I exist.
